After 11 Years On The Street, A Deaf Dog Wakes Up And Realizes His Life Has Changed

The World Health Organization estimates that there are more than 200 million stray dogs on the planet. In the United States, approximately 3.3 million dogs enter animal shelters each year. We will tell you the story of Solo in today’s story. Solo has lived a life that no dog should. For nearly a decade, he fended for himself on the streets of Los Angeles. Solo gradually became ill and was no longer able to keep up with the other dogs.
He eventually became too tired and weak to walk any further and sat down on a woman’s porch. When the woman discovered him, she named him Solovino (Spanish for “he came alone”) and contacted Rocket Dog Rescue for help. He was flown to San Francisco and placed in the care of a foster family. Solo was unfortunately adopted out several times, only to be returned time and time again, despite the fact that it was not his fault.
Until Carol Messina discovered a photo of Solo on the internet and realized she needed to save him. “When I met him and saw how unhappy he was, I knew he was going to stay with me forever no matter what,” Messina told The Dodo. Solo was wary of others because of his past, and he is still wary of them. He didn’t react normally to those around him, and when someone petted him, he flinched.
However, Messina quickly discovered that the issue was more of a hearing issue than a lack of confidence. Solo’s hearing was even worse than anyone had suspected – he was almost deaf. This explains why he flinched whenever someone touched him, he didn’t like it when someone sneaked up on him when he wasn’t expecting it.
His teeth were also in bad shape and were causing him a lot of pain. Thankfully, Messina was able to get him the dental work he required, and he was as good as new after that! Solo is now a contented dog who enjoys running around outside and even playing with other dogs. Messina has also discovered new coping mechanisms for his deafness-related anxiety.
When they go for a walk, he wears a harness that says “deaf dog” so that people don’t pet him without asking. When Messina enters a room, she also flickers the lights on and off so that he is aware of her presence but is not startled. Because of Messina, Solo has a lot of life left in him despite his age. He can now spend the rest of his days in a loving home and never have to worry about being homeless again.
“I’m quite proud of his improvement,” Messina told The Dodo. “It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done, and he’s inspired me to adopt more senior dogs in need of hospice care.”
