Encounter The African “Water Man” Who Rescues Countless Thirsty Animals
Climate change is fundamentally changing the biodiversity and ecosystems of our planet. Africa and Antarctica are among the regions most affected. The situation in Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park, with not a single drop of rain since June 2018, seems surprising. The fate of many animal species seems to be sealed here. But this kind man decided to spare them.
Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua is a pea farmer who delivers truckloads water to thirsty animals every day. And as soon as they heard the truck, the animals ran to Patrick. He carries 3,000 gallons of water every day.
“When I visited Tsavo last June, I found the waterholes dry and the animals sitting around them with very desperate expressions,” Mwalua told Nairobi Wire. “There was no water, so animals depended on people. If we do not help them, they will disappear.”
Patrick knows that “water is life,” so he hopes others to join him in his noble mission. He created a GoFundMe page where people can help him to save these animals. And his beautiful acts of compassion didn’t go unnoticed.
“Last night I saw 500 buffaloes waiting at the waterholes,” Mwalua said. “When I arrived, they could smell the water. The buffalo were delighted and approached us. They started drinking while I was there. They were very pleased.”
Three women from the US decided to help him. Angie Brown, Cher Callaway and Tami Calliope are now helping Patrick on his mission. They now own several trucks and in this way they can transport water to more drier areas across the African savanna.
“His dedication to wildlife and heritage is incalculable,” Callaway explained. “Even risking his life in the middle of the night to carry water in a dry waterholes.”
“I was born around here, grew up in the wild and came to love the wild,” said the hero. “I decided to pay attention to this so that they can protect the wildlife as they grow up.”
