It’s always heartbreaking to see pets abandoned, but life circumstances sometimes force people to give up their beloved pets. Caring for a pet can be costly, and some people believe they are no longer in a position to do so.

That was the story told by a heartbreaking note discovered attached to a dog — but one rescue is now attempting to help both the dog and her family.

The McKamey Animal Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, shared a photo of a handwritten note discovered attached to a dog named Lilo on Tuesday.

Lilo’s “mom” can no longer care for her because she is homeless and has two children, according to the note: “She tried her hardest but was unable to obtain assistance,” the note states.

“I’m too expensive… “She really loves me, and I’m a great dog who enjoys being loved,” the note continues. “Please don’t mistreat me.”

A good samaritan reportedly found Lilo and brought him to McKamey Animal Center, where he was safe and unharmed.

Even though abandoning a dog in this manner is never a good idea, it’s difficult not to sympathize with Lilo’s former owner. It appears that she adored the dog and only gave her up due to dire circumstances.

The McKamey Animal Center was sympathetic and wrote a “Note to Lilo’s Mom” in response.

“We’re so sorry you had to leave her behind. “We recognize that many people are currently struggling to care for their pets,” they wrote. “We understand how difficult it must be to give up an animal you clearly adored because you are unable to provide the care she requires. “We understand.”

They were so sympathetic that they invited the woman to come forward in the hopes of reuniting her with Lilo.

“We will help you with whatever you need to care for her, to the best of our ability. Lilo definitely misses you, and we would like nothing more than to see her go back to the family she loves. Either way, please know that we understand, we will not judge, and we are here to help in any way we can.”

At the same time, they stressed that abandoning a dog like this is wrong, and illegal. As an alternative, they encouraged people in difficult economic circumstances, like Lilo’s mom, to take advantage of their programs for low-income pet owners.

“While we understand why Lilo’s mother did what she did, we wish she had come to us first for resources and assistance,” they wrote. MAC, according to a Facebook post, provides a community pet food pantry as well as free and low-cost vaccines, microchips, and spay/neuter services.

“We want Chattanooga to be a community where pets are truly family for everyone, not just the economically privileged,” they wrote.

It’s a heartbreaking situation, but the McKamey Animal Center is doing the right thing by offering to reunite Lilo with her family and assist them in their time of need.

We hope Lilo’s mother is able to contact us and reclaim Lilo, but if not, we hope this poor dog finds a new home soon.
